Kickin' Republican Posterior, Kissing Liam

The radio is blaring election results. We are almost completely happy about what's happened. One of my favorite NPR moments was when Bill and I were sitting, despondent, in the kitchen, after the last presidential election. The results were announced, and the interim music immediately following was an instrumental version of "It's the End of the World as We Know It." It was subtle, it was quick, but it was there, and it was funny as hell. Now the interim music between reports is dizzy Dixieland jazz. Celebratory and giddy. Yep. I get it.
If only Washington County voters had seen fit to pass the school levy that will keep Phoebe and Liam's little elementary, in danger of being closed, going. Missed it by 30 votes. Now, we're told, the school probably won't close, at least not immediately, but there will be no music, art, or gym. Who needs music, art or gym? Nonessential. There are already no field trips. This will be the 25th year the school has survived without a levy's being passed. A slim majority of voters here just don't see the need. Hey, their kids are out of school, and they don't want to pay a household average of $70 a year to keep the smaller elementary schools going. Who cares? Their kids are all grown. That's the dark side of country livin' in an economically depressed area, friends.
I didn't have the heart to tell Phoebe this morning. She'll know the moment she walks in the door of Salem-Liberty Elementary.
It's another gray, weepy day here, but Democrats have all but swept the offices up for grabs in Ohio, and that's cause for some kind of celebration.
Speaking of celebration, Liam turned seven at 7:24 AM. That was the moment the obstetrician took him and spun him three times, quickly, to get the umbilical cord unwrapped from his neck. I remember watching, not enough time even to pray. Thank God for the doctor's quick hands, and the good blood that began coursing through this precious little boy's veins.
In this picture, he looks so much like my dad, pigeon chest puffed out.He draws in every spare moment. His school papers are full of drawings. There is seige and attack, fear and victory, disaster always awaiting the unwary.

Liam is affectionate. Except for a brief germophobic phase at age 5, he's always been an eager kisser. And he no longer wipes my kisses off, something that gives me great, if inexplicable, joy. Baker gladly submits to Liam's hugs and kisses many times each day.

Thank you for being my sweet Liam, William Henry Thompson IV, Engineer of Many Trains, Artist of Note, King of the Imponderable, the Unanswerable Question, and the Hysterical Non-Sequitur. Happy birthday, precious one. We'll get you music, art, and exercise here at home.

Happy birthday, Liam. May it be a fantastic day!
And, HIP HIP HURRAY for the American Public who finally felt moved to do the right thing! Yippee-skippee!
A sweet day for a sweet boy!
Happy birthday Liam!
You have a real cutey-boy there. My John is 12 and in 7th grade so it's not too cool to hug or kiss his mom. But he's home sick today and even "big guy, almost teen-agers" need extra loving from their moms when they don't feel good!
Happy birthday, little guy!
Great picture at the end, Julie! And at the beginning--finally, a return to the sane side of the spectrum.
Yeah, I think you pretty much have the music, art, and exercise covered!
Happy Birthday Liam!
I recall that he enjoyed hot wheels the one time he was at our house. Don't give up those hugs and kisses any sooner than you are required to. Ryan is in seventh grade and still gets hugs and kisses. He even seeks them out after school on most days. I am not surprised about the school levy and Marietta City schools will be next to ask for money. I hope you all have a very happy day.Lori
Happy Birthday, Liam! Keep giving those kisses. "Who needs art, music, and gym?" Everyone, I think, and my immediate thought was your kids are the fortunate ones. They have all of the above and more.
Happy Birthday from Canada Liam.
That's in metric so it's 1.6 happy birhtdays.
You try and explain that one Mom-scribe.
Went to the levy, but the levy was dry.
Sorry about the school situation.
Ric
Happy birthday to Liam! I was watching the Ohio election returns with interest; much to celebrate, but I'm so sorry to hear about the school levy vote...and so close! Many of the school districts I work with struggle w/the same issue--very frustrating. One tiny rural district (in which I attended first grade, actually) was able to convince voters that giving all local kids a well-rounded education was in their best interests, but it took a major marketing campaign and two previous failed referendums.
Happy Birthday Liam! It was wonderful to see my two favorite boys in today's blog and Liam in his super hero suit no less! It's a shame about your school system but thankfully you are the type of parents that will not allow your children to lack in the areas that the schools are neglecting because of funding. I just feel for those children who do not have the wonderful influence that you and BT3 provide. Simply shameful for those future leaders in southeastern Ohio who will not have the joy of art and music in their early years.
Happy Birthday Liam! Yay! Another November baby - Woo Hoo!
Dear Julie!
I don't often respond to your blog but I look forward to my daily dose of interesting anecdotes and your infectious joie de vivre! Although we have never met, you so delightfully reveal your heart in your blog that I feel as if I'm connecting with a dear friend, daily.
An interesting and inportant sidenote to this is that this morning I was thinking "This is the end of the world as we know it" and then I read your blog. It was such a kick in the pants for me( a good one for this quasi republican!) and so encouraging. My spirits were immediately lifted! If this election can make dear folk like you and bt3 dance and shout then by gum . . . it's a good thing! Thanks for the delightful mental tweak. It is refreshing!
We never know how much our words can impact others. And you - well, you have a beautiful, soulful way with the English language. Thank you for taking the time to blog. You're making more friends than you can imagine.

A very Happy Birthday to Liam!
Lynn,
You are toooo cute. Keep reading. You will become a card-carrying Republicrat.
We're in the middle of Liam's party, the guests are arriving, but what a delight to find your sweet comment. More anon!
Psst... I'm not supposed to tell you folks this, but the levy DID pass! WTAP and other news stations got the wrong info, and the levy actually passed by twenty-three votes. Mother Dearest will post on this tomorrow!
Buh-bye!
Phoebe
P.S. School would be boring without Gym, Art, Music, and Library!
WAHOOO, PHOEBE! GOOD NEWS!
Happy Birthday Liam and I am jumping for joy about the levy!
Clink!
Time to celebrate two great happenings!
Marcy
Thanks Julie for your sweet response!
Phoebe, thanks for spilling the beans. Grrrr-eat news!!!! A wonderful high note to the day!
Sweet dreams tonight!

Happy birthday!!!! to a fellow November person--Liam, you remind me so much of my own son--once a train lover(actually still one at 33), action artist, and superhero--I love reading about your adventures--you are really a neat guy!
ps--we are euphoric about the elections!
Happy Birthday to Liam! He shares the day with my hubby!
Glad to hear that your ref. has probably passed. Even here in over-funded "we never say no to a referendum" suburban Illinois they're turning down the referenda...so I guess we just can't have our cake and eat it too.
We'll take what we can get with the Green Party making a strong showing and the Dems taking over the seats!
Hoo-rah!
Also...Julie, I've been thinking of you as my 2nd graders read a book about Jane Goodall! Life is, over all, pretty good.
Thanks for filling us in, Phoebe! You are lucky (in more ways than one) that you can still enjoy and learn these things at school. Remember this so that one day, if you choose, you can be one of us rabble-rousers who keep such things IN SCHOOL.
Happy happy birthday, Liam!
Happy, happy birthday to Liam and his lovely family. YIPPY! A lucky boy with a fabulous family is always to be celebrated.
And I am so glad Liberty-Salem gets to keep gym, music and art. Three reasons why I homeschool. We have a new governor who is "cute and perky" and just right of Atilla the Hun. I'm not sure my husband will last four years with her. Can we squat on your land? ;-)
Enjoy your evening, and Lynn is on the money.
Belated Happy Birthday to Liam. You are one lucky boy!!
Greetings from Atlanta Georgia where my association is having our annual conference with over 20,000 early childhood folks! Yesterday was a day of rejoicing here, though it is hard to be away from DC on such an extraordinary day! Although for all intents and purposes we are officially nonpartisan (have to make sure we can work with all administrations.)

Happy birthday, Liam.
Yes it does feel much better after this election. I have hope in humanity after all.
School levies are continually frustrating, however. I had to literrally bite me toungue in line at the polls when I heard not one but three people say "my kids are out of school, so it doesn't matter anymore if a levy passes." I didn't realize education was only important for our own kids. Betterment of society doen't matter anymore.
Mike! Your photos are amazing! Thanks for the link, and the support. Thanks for reading.
Tell Colin that Liam is still going strong with Thomas at age 7, and just got two new wooden engines he didn't have--plus HO scale Gordon and James, both with tenders.
Happy Belated Birthday to Liam! (Blogger locked me out of "comments" for a while) Love the last photo, with you resting your feet against the tree.
Glad to hear that the school levy passed. Even though I don't have any kids, I always vote for school levies - can't have enough education, and it is particularly sad when art and music get cut first.

Happy belated birthday to your little man! As for the election, coming from Massachusetts where Ted Kennedy just won his hundredth senatorial election (well, might as well be his hundredth ;)and where we FINALLY voted in a democratic governor in spite of our decidedly democratic house and senate(the first black governor in the state!! Deval Patrick!)we can only watch the rest of the states with baited breath....
Isn't it awesome that Democrats FINALLY get a chance in the house? That's just cool.
The election in-charge people found the absentee ballots in the corner just the other day, and with those, the levy passed by 123 votes. Yipee!
You continue to inspire me to write and blog, Julie. I celebrate the gift you and your talent are to me.
