Baker's Hind Leg and Other Affairs of State

It's been a couple of months since Chet Baker was first laid up with an injury to his left hind knee. At first we feared he had slipping patellae (kneecaps), something that is known in many purebred dog breeds. His parents and grandparents have great knees, so it was a mystery how he could turn up with the malformation that allows the patella to slide around off the bend of the knee. An exam revealed that his knees are nice and tight, but that he'd suffered some kind of injury to a ligament inside the left hind knee joint. Maybe from doing his Michael Jordan moves on concrete? Duh?
The prescription from his veterinarian, Dr. Lutz, was a month of rest. Thanks to my very full travel schedule and bitterly cold weather, he got more than two months of rest. More rest is good, right? In that period, he took exactly two walks with me. I'd say that's some serious rest.
So when we finally lit out for some exercise a couple of days ago, I was distressed to see Chet holding that left hind leg up a LOT. Wasn't he supposed to be all better? Dr. Lutz agreed to see him the next day. He was his usual curioius self as we waited to be seen, cocking his head side to side as he listened to the other dogs in Dr. Lutz's care.
She palped his kneecaps and tried to move them around. She moved the left knee laterally, something that caused him to wince and whip his head around two months ago.
Nothing. Chet didn't have a word to say about it. He was more interested in the dog scuffling sounds outside the exam room door.
This was very good news.Dr. Lutz explained that Chet has indeed healed, but that he's going to be stiff for awhile. The injured knee is actually tighter than the good right knee. The prescription was for some range of motion therapy which I'll give him before we go out, and for short walks slowly increasing to our usual 45-minute hike. I'm delighted, and looking forward to the time when Baker ceases skipping altogether.
You know I have enough Guatemala pictures to blog into 2008. Couldn't stop myself. And blog I will...
Bill walked into my studio this evening. "Bloggin'?"
"Yep."
"Guate?"
"Baker. Gotta give the people what they want."
Laughs evilly. Points finger at me. "It's all about the dog, isn't it?"

"I can take pictures of wild spider monkey faces for crying out loud and all they really want is the dog. Does anybody care about spider monkeys? Nope. Outside their pale of interest. 'Monkeys creep me out. Where's Baker? Need a Baker fix!' They would rather see a lousy picture of Baker than a great picture of a wild toucan or monkey."

Evil cackle, dancing. "It's all about the dog!"
Sigh."It's all about the dog."

Love that pooch.
Gotta love the dog. I've been waiting for a Baker fix! Thanks for sharing such great news. Walk on, Chet Baker!
Contrary to what you think, I loved the parrots and monkeys.
I adore Baker, but I really really like your flora and fauna pics from anywhere. Central America is special.
I've had my fix now give me monkeys and birds.
RR
I feel your pain.
I use NBB as a gauge. When he begins to mutter, "When is she going to post a Chet Baker photo?" I ask myself, "Uh-oh, when was the last time I posted a photo of Cinnamon?"
Glad to hear Chet is well.
Not true. Baker is AWESOME, no doubt about it. He totally played into my decision to get a smaller dog this time (and we're delighted with the result!). That said, I came here for the wildlife stories and commentary and that is my first love.
But, I think it's a little bit like a Classic Rock station. They must play all the old rock stuff but their audience NEEDS their Daily Dose of Led Zeppelin. So, you gotta give us at least a weekly dose of Chet! :)
That last picture of Chet Baker smirking for the camera says it all. He KNOWS!!
Monkeys DO creep me out. It's the intelligence in their eyes. They know we're the only thing keeping them from being the smartest critters on the planet, and they'd like that.
And then there's the poo flinging.
I love you guys, you know that. Just needling you. And myself. Because I live with the fool dog, and I had gotten to the point where I needed a Baker blogfix! Pffffft.
Gotta go in and gnaw on him now. He's lying in state on the super-colorful new quilt we got in Guatemala--made of pieced-together huipils. Think I'll blog about that, too.
Always love hearing about your puppy and glad that things are on the up and up with Chet!
Guilty as charged! I'm as phobic about monkeys as many women are about snakes, (did you get any good herp photos in Guatemala? bring 'em on!) but you know I love that Baker boy! So relieved to hear his knee is mending. And eager to hear about textile adventures as well.
Julie, I am his grandma of course it's all about the dog! HAHAHA....really I love the bird pictures and all the neat factoids I pull from your daily blogs to shamelessly plagiarize (sp) at later dates. You make me shine when I actually can spout off to a group of uninformed friends about rare birds, turtle tips and tracks in the snow....that said I still NEED my Baker fix. I am so glad you are home and even happier to know that your muzzlepuffs is on the mend. My red boy romped on ice this past week and now he is in a cast, slipped a growth plate in the knee area but I have been assured it is not a luxating patella also. Still it is so hard to see a dog in a cast walking about with a worried look on his face.
Nah... it's really all about the Zick. :0)
Glad that Chet is really okay. That's great news. More walks in the woods sounds like a good prescription to complete the healing process.
I think of it as a Zick fix. It's aaalll good.
Julie, you'll be happy to know that my little Liam loves Chet too! I was checking out your blog this morning, and Liam was tugging at me and starting to fuss. I thought he wanted breakfast. He didn't. He wanted to see the Baker photos.

"It IS all about the dog!"
To tell the truth, any new post from Zick is OK by me. I've been blog-stalking you lately, waiting for you to return from your travels and dig your way out of luggage, laundry, and those other annoying household chores that must be keeping you busy.
Keep 'em comin', Julie. You know what we like.
~Kathi, wishing Chet a good rehab
Niki, you tell your Liam that my Liam can't walk by Chet Baker without throwing his arms around the pup's neck and giving him a big long smooch. We often comment, "Poor Baker. That dog just doesn't get any love." Delighted to hear from you and glad Baker's fan base is expanding into a younger cohort.
Katdoc, we're takin' off again tomorrow morning for the Amish Birding Symposium. Imagine. 300 Amish (and scattered English) packed into a pole barn, getting a reading from Letters from Eden. I, for one, am totally stoked!
Well, for me it is all about the Zick. Really, it could be Baker, it could be Guat, it could be Washington County. It's all good.
See, Julie. It really is all about you. You walk on water in the blogosphere.
Mary's right, anything you want to blog about, I'm here reading!
Staaaaahhhhp!
Parrots and monkeys from exotic lands are great, but Baker is the money shot. We just gotta have it!
Zick:
I'll be seeing you in Adams County. I went last year & it was super. Looking forward to an equally awesome time this year.
~Kathi
Baker brought me here. Your writing keeps me coming back.
So, when I teach logical fallacies, I am always looking for examples of false dilemma--you just gave me one. It is NOT either the monkeys or Chet! It can be both--or a third alternative. . .?
Actually, I come here hoping to meet guys.

Awww, Chet Baker is a sweet BT!
You should visit www.woofboard.com Lots and lots of BTs and their owners. People post pics of their BTs, give advice, ask questions, and generally have a fun time. You could even see the famous Pepito, who is plotting BT world domination, lol.
