The Moonlit Ride Home

Seen in the ladies' room of Bixler Hall at Ashland University. I would have planned to attend, but the Whipple One-Shot Buckmasters Club is meeting that night, and I'm bringing petits fours and doing the minutes.
Spotted on a sweet potato leaf in one of Ashland University's glorious flower beds: a male Fiery Skipper. Ahh. I love this bug, and rarely get to see it. For those who are stymied by skippers, its bright orange, lightly-dotted underwing is unique. Which is to say: a beginning butterflier who shies away from skippers has hope of recognizing it.

Filled with the thoughts given to me by the students in David Fitzsimmons' classes, and fueled by the good conversation David, his cool wife Olivia and I had in a sweet little Mexican restaurant afterward, I climbed in the car and started home. I passed Grandpa's Cheese Barn and Heiny's Cheese Chalet. Who comes up with these names? And why do they make me want to abstain from eating cheese for awhile? Could it be the juxtaposition of Grandpa and Cheese, or, worse, Heiny and Cheese? Ponder it. Now wipe your screen. Considered photographing them and decided to keep going. Not in the mood.

I desperately wanted to drive home in the evening light, along old Rte. 250 East through Amish country. A little thundershower had dropped a freshet of rain on the thirsty land, and the full moon was rising in silence over the fields.Coming down out of Apple Creek. Ahh, ahh, ahh. The misty trees folding into the fields, road as river, silo as finial.

The skies were mesmerizing. The moon was big and pink and kept getting itself caught in the wires and treetops. I kept pulling over to gawk and take pictures. The ride, not the destination, is the whole point, and that never seemed truer than tonight. I wished the moon would stay low and pink and that Highway 250 and the evening would go on forever.
How lucky I feel to live in Ohio, to be able to travel through pastoral landscapes like these, passing thin Standardbreds pulling black Amish buggies (images I yearn to capture, but can't bring myself to photograph).

Even birdwatchers have to stop for gas now and then, and where better than this station in Strasbourg?
Besides, it wuz $2.89 a gallon over to the Kaufmann Mart. sorry Kenn, sorry Lisa

My last picture of the night, Simon and Garfunkel singing in my mind's ear.

And the moon rose over an open field
We've all come to look for America.

This post is like a tooth that your tongue just cannot leave alone. This looks much like the evening I drove across the Appalachian Hiway the middle of August. Sigh....

Thanks.

I, too, have driven by Heiny's Cheese, and always get a chuckle out of that name. It would be merely unfortunate to be born as a "Heiny," but who would choose to marry it? Must be true love.

What if my name was Fannie and I married Hans Heiny. I would be Fannie Heiny and I would name our children Phat, Plush, Harry, and Petunia. We'd open a cheese shop and everyone would stop to get some Heiny cheese.

OK I just can't leave That as my comment...I LOVE the moonsoaked photos. Moonlit fields are my favorite thing in the world, right up there with waterfalls and ice falls and rainbows. Your photos are gorgeous. What a great stillness, what a great gift.

I had an uncle Nick who went by Heinie. Go figure. Must have been cool on the Island of Fehmarn where he was from.
Shabeels, (wak wak wak wak) you had better watch the siren song of high-speed Internet. It'll dash you on the late-night rocks. Aren't you supposed to be doing your...ehhm...taxesssss?
Trixie. You need to spend at least three months of the year in Ohio. How about September, October and November? Or March, April and May?

My brother has a place in Tippecanoe-SE of New Philadelphia.
I pass that Sibley Mart on the way home and they ALWAYS have the cheapest gas prices. Such a beautiful part of Ohio.

Shabeels, stop leaving Anon. comments here and go post something on YOUR blog. (After you do your taxes, that is.)

Julie,

I like that plan. How about February, March, and April. Both March and April are useless up here! Hmmm...how to put this in action and still keep my loving, wonderful husband. Hmmm.....

Trixie:

I love Ohio, but not in Feb. - it is the worst time of the year, IMO. Spring and fall are the best; you can't beat May in Ohio. Excellent birding, perfect weather, everything is green and growy. Come in May!

The moon has been stunning the past few nights and I had to comment on your fiery skipper! Have you noticed many more of them this year? We found a few of them here in Allegany which is a first for us!

These photos are evidence that Ohio does have some redeeming qualities (no offense to you Buckeyes, but most of what I know of Ohio is Columbus on up.

Re: Cheesy shops... my favorite funny name is the Mars Cheese Castle in Wisconsin. Sharon has alerted me to a place called Taxidermy & Cheese which may take the prize. I'm afraid of why these two things may share a business.

I've never been to Ohio so I have not had the pleasure of visiting Heiny's Cheese... whaaat? A cheesy last name - worth investigating.

Your moonlight is wonderful and the road trip tells me that I'd love to drive up 77 through Ohio during the good seasons.

Your photos are full of mood and are so refreshing.

Monarch, this is the first Fiery Skip I've had this year. I see maybe one a year if I'm lucky, so no big data bank for you, sorry.

That's Heiny's Cheese Chalet, Mar. Doesn't it make you want to swear off cheese for awhile?

February can be great, if it's warm and the woodcocks are back...the maples sometimes bloom then, and the red-shouldered hawks start to scream. I like February in so. Ohio. I've decided to post my hummingbird photos in the dead of winter. I got a ton of neat shots before they all left (had only one straggler today), but there's so much beauty around I thought I'd save it for when we're all going nuts in the gray months.

Ah, the skipper -- the Keane "Big Eyed Children" of the butterfly world. They're my absolute favorites.

And as a diesel driver (VW Golf TDI, 207,000 miles with the original clutch (muy macha!)), I'm envious of how cheap it is in Ohio. It's as much as $3.29 in Southeastern PA. At 45+ mpg, it's hard to complain, but still, it hurts. I'm not handy enough to turn it into a greasecar. Anyway, I'm more partial to the aroma of fresh baked brownies (from scratch; no boxes die for my dessert) than I am to the smell of french fries.

As for Heiny...my friend Nancy, who lives in Vancouver, brought her 7 year old daughter Emma to visit this summer. The kid had no idea what I meant when I said someone had fallen on his heinie; Nancy had to translate it into Canadian: bum. So of course, heinie was Emma's favorite new word. Old Aunt Molly -- still a bad influence, and proud of it.

Time to go out and scope the moon for migrants. Nekkid dancin' may follow.

P.S. Trixie, that loose tooth (missing filling)/tongue analogy is one of my favorites!

Diesel's $2.99 down to the Peterson Mart! (Stands to reason, since it's the wellspring.)

Katdoc: "Growy"? Did you make that one up?

Thank you, Julie. For putting me off cheese. I was eating a nice slice of cheddar (honest) when I read this. I stopped chewing and looked down at what was left. I had a non-quotable mental image (pertaining to...oh, I can't say it)
and I had to give the cheese to Nellie. Go ahead and yell at me, Kath.
I have to wonder about people who are unfortunate enough to be given an unfortunate name. I mean, can't they change it? There are so many REAL names I have seen and can hardly believe....a pediatrician here in Cincy: Dr. Youngpeters. An audiologist named Dr. Krapp.
And there's always Dick Butkus. As my Mom would say, "I would rather have a number."

Umm.... what with the heiny and the moon (or is that redundant?), maybe the nekkid dancing can wait. Ewww.

Love that moon! It has been exceptionally beautiful for the past few nights. Now, I'll have to get my Concert in Central Park CD out as that tune will be an earwig all day. ;c)

I am both in love with and frustrated by those evenings when I just want the universe to stand still so I can enjoy the moment for a few hours. A beautiful post, and beautiful photos. I feel the same way about Central PA, buggies (and photos thereof) included. The other night, there was a whole BUSLOAD of Amish at the local Snappy's convenience store, and my first thought was "gotta get a picture of that!" but then realized that I couldn't take a pic of them like that. Amish lives fascinate me.

I will let you all (or as folks in PA might say--yous guys OR in Pittsburgh you-uns) debate the merits of cheesy names.
I won't say a word about them--after all I come from the state that has local place names like Paradise and Intercourse. The local joke is...never mind. This is a family blog.
Final name comment--when I first opened your blog and saw the bathroom sign, I immediately thought of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure--Socrates AKA SO CRATES.

Could be a whole lot worse. Could be that the words "Grandpa" and "Heiny" both appeared on the same cheese sign.

Hi Julie, thanks you for stopping by my blog. I liked your response to my earlier comment about my accent. If only you knew. I'm from Northumberland and live about 30 miles from Scotland. My accent is somewhat anglo-saxon with scottish and norwegian viking overtones! People from southern England who speak the way Americans imagine we do, can't understand me ! Love the blog especially the Chet-bits!
Thanks again....

That's one of my favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs. I've been looking for america all of my life, and a rising moon over the heart of the land does it for me. I like the rhythm of this and the previous post.

One of the best ways to the cure of ED is to see the disease in its
correct light. It should merely be seen as a disease, and disease it is,

necessary to do away the disease from one’s life. People attach a lot of
other factors like shame, embarrassment, fear, low self esteem etc and
these make the treatment of erectile dysfunction all the more complex
