Beautiful Woodpeckers

Among my favorite birds to paint are woodpeckers. I love their markings, their colors, their bold architecture, and most of all their head and bill shapes. They seem to draw themselves.

Who’s this, hitching up the side of the studio birch? What else could it be?? A juvenile female yellow-bellied sapsucker. She’s got a bindhi of ruby on her forehead, but her throat will stay white. She’s been punishing my poor birch tree, drilling row after row of sap holes. It’s a wonder the thing doesn’t just break in half. What a mess!

I had to marvel at the perfection of her camouflage. Could she blend in any better with the wounds she’s wrought on the birch trunk? Even her eye looks like a sap hole. She’s not the only birch torturer, though. The red-breasted nuthatches are using sapsucker wells as a place to bash their sunflower seeds until the hulls come off. I can almost hear the birch saying ow ow ow ow. Sick trees give more sap, and the sapsuckers know that. I read a study calling them “victim trees.” The more woodpeckers bang on them, the more high-quality sap they give, until one fine day they just up and croak. Nice.Does anyone NOT love flickers? I remember getting pretty annoyed with them when I was a kid growing up in Richmond, Virginia, the way they drilled on the downspout early on summer mornings when I was still trying to get my 12 hours of shuteye. Oh, how I wish they were still that common. And how I wish I could still sleep until 1 PM.

This little gal seemed to want to be photographed from every angle.

Be sure to get my red chevron. And my crescent chest.
Ahh, flickers. How lucky are we to have such an ornate and lovely woodpecker still among our avifauna.

Beautiful woodpeckers. Flickers! I do remember the drilling on the downspouts in Baltimore City!, as a child.

Lovely photos, Julie. I talked about missing the woodpeckers tonight but I know they'll be back.

I love woodpeckers in any size or color variation. How about the Acorn Woodpecker from the western US? That facial pattern is just like a clown. And nothing flips my lid like a Red-headed Woodpecker. WOW!

I rate my birding walks based on the number of woodpecker species I see/hear. I have to have at least three species; four or more is a good day. Sunday was a 4 woodpecker day at the Cincinnati Nature Center, with Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and Pileated. I have had two 7 woodpecker days in my life, and during my October vacation in eastern Ohio, I had 7 species in 3 days.

I think flickers are getting harder to find, more's the pity. They are very striking birds.

Thanks for the photos!

Good luck with your show. I hope you sell many paintings.

Probably worth mentioning that it was a flicker in hand which instigated Roger Tory Peterson's lifelong interest in birds, when he was but a youngster.
Flickers tend to be taken for granted, they're so common, but they're gorgeous seen close up. A bird rehabber friend of mine once cared for a clutch of flicker babies (when their nest tree was cut down) and those little guys were likely the cutest woodland birds I've ever seen.

I love Flickers and haven't seen one in ages. I like that I can now watch a bird in flight and tell that it's some sort of woodpecker. Such progress...lol.

We have a "family" of 4 flickers still excavating ants from our lawn.
I'd seen them earlier in the summer--surprised they're still together as a unit. Most other woodpeckers seem less social.

Flickers are special to me--one plopped into our cold woodstove and greeted me with knocking to be released. I sympathize with your birch--ow!

Beautiful! I love woodpeckers! I do feel bad for your birch, though. My downies and red-bellies are quite gentle to my tamarack, especially compared to your sapsucker.

I miss my family of Flickers. They had to move on when the willow split and fell over in a severe storm. It was quite the backyard drama to watch the Starlings try to drive them out every summer and take over the nice little real estate they had developed. Hmmph...squatters!

The downies, hairies and flickers are favorite customers at my peanut feeders and birdbath year round. I am lucky to live in a transition zone so I get both the red shafted and yellow shafted varieties in my yard.

I have a special place in my heart for flickers. The very first time I saw one was the day my Dad died. I was on the phone with a cousin, telling her about Dad going to the hospital, and I glanced out the back and saw a flicker gorging on ants under one of the maples. I was so excited...but at the same time worried to pieces about my Dad.
Now whenever I see a flicker, I think to myself, "Look, Dad..."

I'm new to birding and identifying birds. So new that I thought all the flickers on my property were some game bird because of the way they flap off with soft whoo whoo sounds when I come up the drive. they fly low and go into the wild apple trees. but I finally got photos of them and after enlarging, I found immediately that they were flickers.

I finally photographed a pileated woodpecker last week!
