It was a wonderful commentary, as usual! Good to hear your voice - makes washing dishes enjoyable :o)
What a disturbing commentary. I also drive a narrow, curving mountain road every day. I am surprised that there aren't more accidents, but I think most of us are aware that around every curve might be an idiot well over the line.
It's a helpless feeling of invasion and the heck of it is that the other driver doesn't care at all and never seems to get caught.
Well, he cared enough to hightail it when I came after him...so maybe he knew he'd made a boo boo. After 6 DUI's, it's obvious he's not bothering with a license any more. Ahh, country life.
The best thing to do here is call the county mounties or the state patrol ASAP because then they can do something--or at least that is my experience. In North Dakota if you find a drunk on the road the state police will respond very quickly. We have no room on the roads for impaired drivers. In any event it is good that no one was hurt.
This is sad and scary. What has our society come to when we can't stop a guy like this before he kills? Why do we pay so much in taxes for police that only show up when they must?
I understand the legal technicalities that make it impossible for JZ to do anything about this particular single instance, but what is more troubling is that the guy already has SIX previous DUIs and apparently still has a license, a vehicle, and a normal enough life to permit him to do it again. Wake up Ohio and pass some laws with teeth.
Actually, there is something to do done. You call the cops and insist that they cite the other driver. Tell them you are willing to testify in court. You must be able to identify the driver, so get a good look at his face (which Julie did). And she knew where the guy lived, so the cops wouldn't have to search. File a written complaint with details. Sometimes you have to insist or go over the street cop's head.
This resonates with all of us. I think we all have been there and it keeps us up at night thinking how many lives could have been lost in a blink of an eye.
Hopefully airing this close to the holidays will give some folks pause when they are thinking about having one last drink before driving home.
