Color from the Conservatory
Part of my Cattleya loot from the orchid show! Shot during a rare sunny moment. It's just relentlessly cold and dreary here. They say it will warm up by Friday. I thought you could use some color, because I sure can. During the orchid show last weekend, Cindy, Shila and I wandered through Franklin Park Conservatory's beautiful exhibits. Every year, the Conservatory raises butterflies and releases them in the rainforest exhibit area. They float through, feeding on flowers and fruit, and people reach out to them as they pass, like they'd reach out to the Queen, just hoping to make contact. I found it so touching to watch. For some reason it doesn't occur to me to hold my hand out to a butterfly going by--I just let it pass. But everyone else tried to touch them. It was very sweet.
There's a big koi pond with some real lunkers in it. My favorite is Lemon Boy.
The glass spheres by the amazing artist Dale Chihulhy set them off so beautifully. FPC has a knack for pairing the work of artists with the art of horticulture and animal husbandry. I love this place. You never know what sculpture or artwork might be peeking out of the vegetation!
We watched the koi picking up coins from the bottom of the pool, sucking them, and then spitting them back out. It's something to do. They doubtless get pretty bored cruising the same figure eight all day long.Back at the orchid exhibits, some Paphiopedalums (ZOWIE!!)
and Phragmipediums (both representatives of the ladyslipper tribe, but from far-flung places like Borneo)
drew me back into the luscious world of orchids. Back home on my windowsill, two Paphiopedalums are sending up buds. I cannot wait!! OK, that's enough cheery positivity for anyone...
WHINE WARNING!I hope you're enjoying this blog. I truly don't know how much longer I'll be able to keep it up. Blogger has been giving me fits for weeks now. About 75% of the time, I waste an hour or two just trying to get a single post up. I attempt to post the photos five and six times for each post you read. I get "Bad Response from Server" most of the time. And then I have to try again, hours later. This is an art form for me, and constantly working against Blogger is a colossal drag. It's like having all my watercolors dry into rock. I don't know what's to blame, but what should be (and once was) a pleasure is now a hassle. Life's too short, and it should be lived to the fullest. Endlessly fooling around with Blogger isn't part of my plan. If any other bloggers out there have a solution, or a hassle-free blog server, I'd love to hear about it. It's a big, beautiful world, and I love sharing it, but the hassle, I can live without.

I would really miss not reading your blog entries each day, but understand your frustration with fighting the system to get your posts accepted. Hopefully, the problem can be fixed before your patience is exhausted! All of your entries are a joy to read Julie!
I can highly recommend Live Journal. I regularly read of my Blogger friends having techical issues, but LJ rarely does. Not to say it *never* does, but it is rare, and they are quite helpful with posting bugs, maintenance plans, etc. It's free, so you could give it a test drive if you were curious.
Chihuly + gardens= bliss. I went to the Chihuly in the Garden exhibit in Atlanta's botanical garden in 2004 and spent the entire day there. I tried to re-visit to experience the night version, open only on Tuesdays, but Hurricane Frances made sure that didn't happen.
Wordpress has some beautiful artsy templates, but it seems a bit complicated to set up. If you're savvy, I bet it would be great for you. I've been pretty frustrated with Blogger lately, also.
Dear Zick,
I hope you don't give up on the blog! What will all of Baker's fans (like me) do without our fix?
Julie,
Don't give up the ship!
I've had frustrating sessions with Blogger, too, but it seems to have improved over the last week.
Should we all rise as one and inform Blogger that we're not gonna take it anymore?
I switched from Blogger to TypePad for no particular reason but I'm glad I did as I keep hearing about the troubles Bloggers are having. TypePad is pretty nice!
Hey Gyrl-
Your fans won't let you quit. I have enjoyed WordPress.
Keep it up, you need it, we need it...you've got options.
Talked to our IT guy here at work and he says blogger just can't handle that many pics and unless you can archive you will probably have to remove some of your earlier posts to alleviate the problem.
Julie-
I've been reading your blog since Birdchick-you are on my short list that I read over coffee most mornings. I would miss you! Please try a little more?
I would miss The Continuing Adventures Of Chet Baker. Hope you fine a solution to the aggravation.
I am beginning to think I’m the only guy who comments on your blog.
Hope you find the mangrove cuckoo.
I work within walking distance of the Tacoma, Washington museum of glass that was built for Dave Chihuly's art (he's from around here). Talk about bliss! The Tacoma branch of the U of W (across the street from the museum) has a HUGE orangy-red chandalier of his in the tower of the library (makes it very hard to study).
Time to unite and get serious with blogger, it's one thing for me to have problems, but if Julie is thinking of giving up the blog, that's the last straw!
I don't think NBB could take life without Chet Baker updates.
Try Live Journal, or Word Pad or any of the other suggested, just don't give up. Can you wait til NBB and I visit? We can see if he can help out or set you up.
Dear Julie:
Please don't quit. While I know you are frustrated with the techie side of your blog, I would miss reading you so much. I have been with you since BirdChick and enjoy many of the same things you do - I'm a birder and a dog mom, I lived in Marietta for a year, I love Franklin Park Conservatory, and I visited Guatemala while in college (even boated on Lake Atitlan and saw grebes; since it was 1980, I like to think they were Giant Grebes, but will never know). I don't get the orchid stuff, but you are teaching me.
While I know your painting, your NPR work, your travel, your wild birds, your kids, dog, husband and home all demand your attention, please save a small bit for us. Maybe cut down to 3 or 4 posts per week instead of trying to post every day. Or, change to a new system if Blogger is making you crazy. Please, say you'll give it one more try.
