A Little Ad

Is a blog the place to reveal one's deepest thoughts, insecurities, and fears? Is it a romp through daisies? A place for shameless self-promotion? A place to talk about your dog's flatulence? A blog can be all of these things. The tricky part for me is keeping a balance. I'm afraid that if I hit you over the head with this thing I'm trying to get out into the world, you'll say, "Uck. I'm just here for bluebirds" (or copperheads, or Boston terrier pictures, or whatever...) I don't want to violate your trust. I don't want to be crass.

Phew. Having confessed that, I would like to give you a link to an archived radio interview for WOSU Columbus' Open Line talk show. Host Bob Singleton had obviously read the advance galley of Letters from Eden and asked some really fun questions. The interview is here.

When you get to the OpenLine archive page, just scroll down until you find the July 21 show. I think my favorite moment in the interview is when a faithful subscriber to Bird Watcher's Digest calls. She's 89 and very sweet.

I like doing radio interviews, though I get so excited that I come off as kind of intense and nerdy. I talk too fast and just get all balled up in the thrill of it. You can almost hear me panting. There will be a bunch of interviews coming up though, as the book gets closer to its release date of October 4, so maybe I'll have a chance to display some coolness in the repetition.

If you'd like to find out more about the book, I'm taking advance orders on my web site. You can read a bit about it here

and you can actually order it here.

Most computer-savvy people automatically go to Amazon or Barnes and Noble for books. If you order it from me, I will inscribe it to you. Amazon can't do that. So that's worth something, I think. It has been a blast to keep a list of people wanting this book sent to them. 71 and counting. A couple of orders arrive every day. I'll have copies in mid-September and will be sending madly thereafter. Just can't wait. I have this vision of the studio full of cases of books and me and the kids wrapping and stuffing them to send. It's a good picture.

End of ad. Back to the flatulent Boston terrier, he of the dangly soft jowls. Please don't, Chet. Not now.

Hey, if you can't PR your own work in your own blog, there's something wrong. I'll be ordering mine from you. Are you doing any signing tours? Stan Tekiela did a stop at our local WBU last fall, they tend to have lots of events in October.

Does Chet burp? Robin does. I've never had a burping dog before, and it's hilarious. A little 4 pound dog giving you the sweet "pick me up" doggie look, then opens his mouth and burps at you!

As of this moment, the link you posted almost works, but not quite. It ends up with your blog site address at the beginning. The good part starts where the http:// appears in the middle.

Just thought you would want to know.

Bless you, Anonymous. I've fixed the bug and the link should work now.
Maureen, Chet does indeed burp, but not as much as he farts.
I am going to tour, don't know how much just yet. I would imagine that next spring when all the bird festivals hit will be super-busy for me. Good thing I got so much baby bird painting time in this spring!

I ordered my copy day before yesterday and can't wait to receive it! Not everyone blogs about dog farts- you're my kind of gal!

I think you've got a great balance going but that doesn't matter. The beauty of the blog is that it is your's to with what you want. Chances are if people are reading your blog, they like what you have to say, so it seems natural that they would want to buy your book.

There aren't laws on blogs yet, so say what you want, self promote all you want. If people don't like, they'll just skip that entry.

Face it, Julie--we like you.

I have forwarded the link to your book to everyone I know who might want to buy me a Christmas or birthday present. (They think I am jumping the gun, but the early bird gets the autographed book, I always say!)

I thought Rotts held the patent on farting; don't tell me Bostons do it, too!

Had a bird rescue today - just as I opened the back door, a bird flew into my glass-enclosed back porch. Unfortunately, one of my cats was there, too. I was shrieking at the cat, who was leaping at the bird, who was flinging itself against every window on the porch. Every time I opened one window to let it out, it flew to another to escape the cat. Finally, I was able to grab it and toss it out an open window, then slam the window shut before the cat leapt out. Whew!

In my panic to avoid birdicide, I realized I don't have a clue what it was. Not any of my usual backyard residents, that's for sure. It was small, greenish yellow, and with a small (slightly curved?) bill. I am thinking it was a juvenile (or female) warbler of some variety. I have Common Yellowthroats breeding in the field across the road. Maybe???

Dang! Had a bird in the hand and didn't take time to look at it. Not a good birder while in panic mode, I guess.

I'm glad you did your little ad because I was interested in ordering a few copies as gifts and had wondered how soon they'd be available. I thought it might be crass of *me* to ask you about it in an off-topic comment. Neat that you'll write a personal inscription - the book cover looks just gorgeous!

I followed your link to your radio interview - loved it and I'm looking forward to the book!

Hmmm... book tours you say?

Thought about international signing events. Hint, hint.

You should broaden your scope; you’re too restrictive in your subject matter.(grin)

Where else can I read about orchids and dog farts?

I'm excited about your book. I'll be ordering today. I think your book will be a great Charlotte Mason style Nature Study living book. We will be using it (if it is what I think) beginning in the Fall.

Congratulations on your book, Julie! I'll be ordering mine from you pronto. Beautiful cover- you caught the most brilliant light in those leaves. Come on down to OK for a signing, will you? I'll give you all my ground orchids if you do!

What a conundrum...I want to buy one of your books now, but I have told everyone I know about it, and I am sure to get it for Christmas or my birthday, but I also want to buy it for everyone I know. So what do I do????

Loved the interview and sent you my order form yesterday. Can't wait to get the book...now all I have to do is figure out how to get some of that Zickefoose wine to go with it!

Please tell me you'll be touring to Seattle, Wa.!
Is there a schedule? (Hope so).

There's no book tour schedule as yet. When we were "touring" for Identify Yourself: A Guide to the 50 Most Common Bird Identification Challenges last May, we tacked on book signings to our already crammed festival schedule. So far, nothing to the Pacific Northwest, but we'll be at the Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico this November. I've a feeling the Letters "tour" will develop organically as people get interested in the book and speaking engagements follow. Thanks for asking!
