If I could give you one thing
It would be peace.
And the crinkle of leaves, warm in the sun
And a quiet heart to settle in them
Like the first comma of spring
Soaking up the heat and meaning of the day

You would see the phoebe
Whirl off to catch a dance fly

And you would spook the woodcock
And find his chalk still warm on the ground

And I’d be beside you.
I'd wanted to give you one thing but
it turned out to be the whole day
The sunny woods
The comma
The phoebe
The woodcock
And me.

Swami learned something again. Swami's Grammar taught him to never use an eastern comma west of the Mississippi, unless there was a dependent clause. [This makes The Swami wonder if the IRS considers Mrs. Claus to be a dependent claus for tax purposes]
Beautiful.
Beautiful post and photos - especially that last.
Might have been nice to have a photo of a bit more of that woodcock, but, well...
Glad that spring has found its way to you in these little signs!
I wish the same for you, Julie. A day like this is what we all need, and YOU.
Laura,
The woodcock was five feet from me when he sprang up right in front of me. Every detail sharp in the sun, so beautiful, and me just standing with my mouth open watching, watching, camera with long lens on it hanging uselessly around my neck. I understand completely why there is still no ivory-billed woodpecker photo. When push comes to shove I just stand there gaping. So I stuck my pinky finger in the puddle he left and it was still hot from his body, and I felt a little closer to him. By now you all are used to my photos of poo. Sometimes that's all you get. I sat out with the woodcocks in the orchard this evening, camera ready, but had to be content with their song, which was enough, after all.
I was only joshing you, Julie.
I think seeing woodcock at all is a gift.
Even their poop is pretty cool (or warm, like you said!)
"Sigh" Thank you, Julie.
lovely. just lovely. (sighing)
What a beautiful day. All the critters know that spring is near.
Very nice. I would give you some chocolate, too, which would make your list complete.
Your interpretation of the life around you is a constant blessing to me.
I was holding my breath within the first few lines of your post. I thank you for sharing your beautiful poem of life. It reminds me to appreciate the gifts that each day bring.
And I wish you all peace as well, Roxanne in WY
what a lovely gift to all of us...thank you!
That was beautiful Julie.
