Flash Horses of Wisconsin

A sweet pair of resting paints. I couldn't help but think about Boston terriers, on a slightly larger scale.

If any generalization can be made, here's one: I talk about things I love a lot in this blog. Like many young girls, I went through a heavy duty horse phase. Whatever the Freudian implications, I just had to be around them. I still adore them, though I know a little too much about vet bills and shoeing and housing and tangling up in barbed wire to want to actually own one. But man, do I love to feast my eyes on horses, the flashier the better. North Dakota drives me wild in that regard. Seems like every string of horses is made up mostly of paints and skewbalds. But Wisconsin came through for me, on my drive back to the airport.

This was a very nice strawberry roan paint.
This one had a bowler hat of black. I always like to imagine the owners, watching a foal being born. He's got a hat!! And a beard!
Not to be outdone was this half strawberry, half vanilla pony. He had glass eyes to top off the ensemble. This one would be fun to name. A Neopolitan pony.I'm a sucker for a nice buckskin. Look at the dapples in his coat. He shines with health, and that long mane is so appealing. Mmmm. I'd pay his vet bills. This is one of the more amazing pintos I've ever beheld, a crazy carousel horse, a work of art, a canvas in flesh and blood. Yes, the other half of his head was white, and so were his eyes--a pale ice blue.

But this filly just killed me. A leopard Appaloosa, blue roan to boot. Please. Could she be any flashier? I could have stayed and watched these horses all day. Given world enough and time, I'd paint horse portraits. I've done one on commission and loved every minute of it-a dapple gray Thoroughbred. That was years ago. Sometimes I think how much simpler life might be if I just painted pet portraits. I'd start with this little filly, whether the owners wanted a painting of her or not. Heck, I'd paint the whole lot of them.

Droooool. Horse fix.

Do it! Paint a horse of your choice. Own a horse. Yeah, I know how expensive it is and more importantly the time and work involved - my daughter visited her friends' horse farms when she was younger and saw equestrian competitions. I even rode Buck, about 17 hands high and what an embarrassment that was... I shouldn't even mentioned it here.

They're just so grand and beautiful and some do remind me of big BTs.

Gorgeous horses, Julie. Yum. I have always had a soft spot for Palominos. I can't resist them.

I, too, doubt I'll ever own one. Perhaps after we win the lottery . . . yea, that's the ticket!

You know what we love so much about you? You are not so one sided that you can't discuss a variety of interesting things. Having coffee with you (via my laptop) every morning is a treat. Thanks.

Cool horse pictures, Julie. I like horses too--especially their very distinctive horsey smell. I always try to visit the horse barn when we go to the county fair and pet their velvety noses. Thanks for sharing "all the pretty horses."

I always said that had I not gotten so head over heels about Boston's I would have considered breeding horses. A bit more expensive granted but oh my they smell so good! I now have a big chestnut Tennessee Walker mare that I have owned since birth. She is a lawn ornament as I am no longer the rider I once was. I keep her strictly for medicinal purposes...every time I get blue I go bury my nose in her lovely neck and mane. Granted she is an unnecessary expense, as my husband reminds me of regularly, but what can I say my hear soars when I watch her glide across my pastures herding goats and a lone mule colt. Thank you for the horse fix, while I love pictures of Chet too you always make my morning coffee great fun.

I don't know of a woman alive that didn't have a "horse" phase! I finally was able to take riding lessons near my home at Rock Creek Stables a few years ago. Funny thing, though, the first thing we were taught was how to dismount REALLY FAST! Rock Creek Park, being in the middle of DC would sometimes have park service or military helicopters flying low over the park that would spook the horses and they would bolt!

Absolutely LOVE the leopard print!

I am once again in a horse phase and I wouldn't trade it for sanity. I half-lease (which means I get to ride 3 times a week) a red roan mare and it is way fun. But I confess I'm jonesing for something that will jump... and I love a dapple grey.

Great-looking horses. I'd love to see a painting of that leopard-spotted one. She's quite an unusual beauty. My step-daughter is a horse-trainer. I think she'd flip over these pics. I may have to send her a link.

Hey, maybe there's a horse lover out there who would help a poor horse in Rockford, Il.

I've called the Animal Control, Hooves in Woodstock Il. and sent pictures out over the net. Nothing has been done and now the horses ribs are showing.

The place is located at 54xx 56xx S. Meridian Road, Rockford, IL between Tipple and Fitzgeral Roads, east side of Meridian.

Horse stands in a pen all day long, food and water is give only every few days, ribs are now showing. He has very little shelter, only a couple of small trees and is in distress with this hot weather.

No one seems to care here. I'm deathly allergic to horses but that doesn't stope me from caring.

Is there any way we could get this information out before this horse just dies.

Barb, Rockford, IL
