Turn on Your Radio
This just in: I've been told that one of my commentaries will air this afternoon (Wednesday, August 22) on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. It will air in the first half of the second hour of the show. Here in the Eastern time zone, that would have it airing between 5 and 5:30 p.m., since our show starts at 4 p.m. It should air right after a story about a survey of married couples. The piece is about some of the things that happen (and don't) when you've been married for a long time.
It's been a bit of a dry spell; I haven't been on the air since May, when I admitted to doing dastardly things to house sparrows. There wasn't a Zick embargo that I know of; I was just traveling too darn much to write or record anything. This is a piece that NPR's been holding for a couple of years, and my genius editor remembered it and found that it fit right in with a story that came up. Hope you can tune in and hear it! If you miss it, listen here after 7 p.m. today.
In another bit of shameless self-promotion, I've received word today that Letters from Eden is one of five finalists for a Great Lakes Book Award. Didn't win it, but it's a finalist. Not going to argue with that. Life is good.

ooooooo, I'm glad I took a break from work to check your blog! I'll be listening at work.
Congratulations on being a finalist! Now, when does your book "Leash Training for Dummies" come out (smile)
What an honor! Congratulations! I read a part of your book several times a week. Like Calgon...it takes me away. Thanks.
Hey Julie, It's not shameless self-promotion...you knew it was a great book and we all told you it was a great book and now others are finding out too. Congratulations!
Great commentary! I laughed out loud when I heard your demonstration of talking and flossing (complete with "PING").
My husband and I sat in the parking lot waiting for our Chinese carry-out and listened.
Julie - we were both touched. After 40 years of marriage and a lot of tooth-flossing - we know of what you speak.
Particularly the showers - the ones that bring the new growth.
Nice. You nailed it with that one.
Hey, Julie's Peeps,
Let NPR All Things Considered folk know you were glad to hear her on the air again.
I did! Go to npr.org and click on the Contact Us link and go from there.
Loved it Julie! Sounds like the beginnings of a new book!

Letters from Eden is the greatest book - I moved it from my dusty nightstand to a shelf where it's displayed in the family room, soon to be hear your Phoebe print. It deserves honor. Congratulations, Julie.
I listened at 5:23 - loved hearing you. And, as usual, your commentary made me laugh and cry.
Julie--I heard you (and I didn't even read your blog until just now!).
And, to show where your commentary ranks in my life, my daughter who is visiting from London (England) just walked in the door, and I told her to shush until I heard you!
hmmmm...listened to the comentary today on NPR; If small affirmations hold us together - why does it feel like setteling for second place? rubbing hands on fat belly "Yep... yes siree... this is as good as it gets". It's a sad state to exist. Daily I hold my spouse on a pedastal and the passion grows deeper everyday.
I love the family photo in this post, you and Bill have a beautiful family. Looks like life is indeed good !
Congratulations on the honors for "Letters From Eden", in every way it is a marvelous book and accolades are richly deserved. May we look forward to "Letters From Eden II" with a chapter about "Magic" and another about the phoebe (that's the Sayornis rather than Thompson variety) ?
What a nice commentary Julie. And, congrats on the book being named a finalist. It's the winner in my house and sits proudly on the shelf in our great room.
I really enjoyed your commentary on marriage yesterday. Can you post the transcript on your blog so I can share it with others? Looks like you have a lot to be grateful for and I can tell that you are. Happy trails to you and yours...
I missed it, hmm going to have to go back into the NPR archives!
That was a funny one, thanks for the chuckle! Congrats to you about the book.
Nice family photo too.
Wonderful commentary, and so true. My husband and I found each other in our 50's and are now celebrating 10 years together. The passion has become like a great fireplace fire with enveloping warmth and frequent brilliant flares. You nailed it about humor, too. He makes me laugh all the time, and silliness is an important part of the glue between us.
And more congratulations on Letters From Eden. I've given copies to many friends, and the book lives on my bedside table where I can dip in and fill my mind with lovely images before sleep. Thanks for sharing your gifts.
I missed the first airing but caught it early this morning and must say like many others have here...you nailed it. I have been with my DH since 1991 and you are so right, it gets better every day in so many different ways. We don't floss together but what the heck he still makes me laugh more than any other human on the planet has or will. Congrats on your nomination actually you should have been the winner hands down!
Heard it -- soothing balm for the soul. Thanks!
Congrats on the finalist thing!
