Blessings All Around

The blue jays are moving. An early Bruce Cockburn song went:

Mmmm—every day
Flashes like a spray of blue jays
Mmmm- a golden crown on every one
Like an eagle, seen against the sun.

Jays flashing from tree to tree against autumn foliage do something to me. I try and mostly fail to capture their beauty in a picture. I’m grateful to have such a big, boldly beautiful bird be common around here, and abundant in the fall. If you’re ever tempted to take blue jays for granted, just have a birder from England or Wales stay at your house. You’ll never look at blue jays, cardinals, hummingbirds or lightning bugs the same way again. Imagine life without them!

We had a Welsh family spend a week with us some years ago. Steve Moon is a birder who gives new meaning to “avid.” He chases vagrants and can endlessly discuss the pattern on the third tertial of some juvenile stint. But let a blue jay land on the feeder and Steve would drop everything and stare, open-mouthed. “Brilliant!” he’d shout. He’d stand under the porch light at night, gently capturing and examining moths, and he announced that he could stay here for a year and never identify them all. To him, we owe the small bit of knowledge that we have Setaceous Hebrew Characters at our lights at night. What a moth name. It refers to a little black scrawl on the wing that looks like a Hebrew letter, lying on its side (setaceous). Yeah!

Peter Lawson, a peerless bird guide from South Africa, had a similar reaction to our throngs of ruby-throated hummingbirds when he stayed here. The closest thing Africa has to hummingbirds is sunbirds, which clamber around on inflorescenses, probing with curved bills. They’re colorful, in a greasily iridescent way, but they’re too big to hover and dart; they’re five times the size of hummingbirds. Peter was enchanted with the hummingbirds and the colorful warblers and tanagers in our forests. And his favorite North American mammal was the opossum, another animal we tend to take for granted. He was deeply impressed with the forest everywhere, and kept asking who owned and managed this or that tract we’d drive by. He couldn’t believe I didn’t know. In South Africa, any existing forest is under some kind of official protection, and likely to be surrounded by high game fencing. Peter just couldn’t get over the thought that he might see white-tailed deer running free across the road, when we weren’t even in a game preserve. He couldn’t believe that garden centers left their flowers outside all the time—he said they’d all be stolen the first night in South Africa. Think about it—living in a place where anything that isn’t tied down is stolen; where the forests are all known, circumscribed, heavily protected; where all “game” is accounted for and certainly not wandering out amongst the populace. We are truly blessed, with our hovering hummingbirds, wandering deer, our blankets and miles of forest, our sprays of blue jays.

We had a similar experience with some visitors from Switzerland: "OOhh...are those turtles? We've heard of them!" I guess we all tend to forget that our everyday is someone else's exotic.

I read once that Roger Tory Peterson's favorite bird was the Blue Jay.

Your story reminds me of a time when I was in California, with my field guide open to the "jay" page, trying to sort out Scrub Jays and Stellar's Jays when someone looking over my shoulder said, "Wow! I'd LOVE to see one of those birds!" It was a "plain" old Blue Jay.

Some people dislike them because they can be pushy at the feeding tray, but I love their color and verve and zest for life.

These jay photos are most awesome!

Much thanks for reminding me of our Ohio blessings. I spent some time working in Puerto Rico last year and met a man who had been to Ohio. He was impressed with the fact that we have fish in our streams. He said "Maybe you don't believe me, but I saw them. When you go home, look for yourself". A fishless stream never occurred to me, but that's how in is in PR.

PS: I wandered over from LiveJournal where I created a syndicate feed from your Blogger journal at Julie Zickefoose.

What we take for granted...and how we're reminded of its value when we don't always have it around. Like the hummingbirds--I think I love them best because as they leave, I worry for their safe return. They're even more beautiful when you consider their accomplishment.

We have the best of all worlds. We don't have bird feeders large enough for the Blue Jays. But we have lots of oak trees that are full of acorns. We've been delighted to see the antics of the Blue Jays as they get to the small branches to eat the acorns. I never knew they were so acrobatic.

I hope people are more aware and not complacent because development is eating up so much habitat, everywhere. In Illinois, Wisconsin, the farm land and privately owned wilderness areas are disappearing at a frantic pace. it makes me cry for the birds and animals

I love the jays, too and think your pics are wonderful! Isn't it nice the way they match the sky at this time of year?

This story reminds me of a group of Russian students who came to America on an educational exchange at the high school where I worked in Bel Air, MD. The highlight of their stay was going to the grocery store. They wanted to visit every day. When offered an apple, they ate it entirely, core and all. A plain old apple - joy.

Blue Jays in Baltimore City were the first birds I remember as a child. They attacked my Mother's cats for years. I still love them but they are shy and scarce where I live now. I miss them.

We truly do have some fab birds here. I'm very fond of jays, the most festive of corvids. They seem to take great delight imitating Red-tailed Hawks, a game which screams "made you look!"

West Nile Virus has taken a big chunk out of the Blue Jays and Crows in my part of the world...but we still have a few, and I'm glad to hear them.

They really like the corn I put out for squirrels, LOL!

It's so true. I remember a friend's new son-in-law from Australia who was fully enthralled by... squirrels? He'd never seen one and would just watch them with rapt attention as he remarked about how odd it was to see so many just roaming freely. Course, I suppose we'd be staring with mouth agape at the wallabies and such.

Blue jays ARE common, but still very cool birds!

Thanks for the message today's blog post brings. Sometimes it takes others to open our eyes to how we are truly blessed. We must be good stewards of our landscape and our fauna.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the reminder of how truly blessed we are with nature and the freedom to enjoy it. We must never take that privilege for granted.

P.S. I love bluejays too and enjoy watching them squabble over the peanuts-in-the-shell I put out for them.

My family gets irritated by our Steller's Jays -- I love them. Yes, they are raucous and pushy but wow are they ever beautiful! Thanks for reminding us to look for amazing in our everyday.

I love Blue Jays, even though every time I see one it means we lose the ballgame. I've been seeing a lot these past few years .... They are also the only bird that, when landing on the birdfeeder in our front yard, make our littleorangeguy so nervous that he slinks back from his birdwatching perch on the window sill.

The call of Blue Jays will forever remind me of my grandparents home in Youngstown, Ohio. They lived in what had been the caretakers home on a huge estate and the woods were full of Blue Jays. Love them!

Oh yes I am an 'avid' birder from the UK and what I would give to see any of your garden birds... BJ's, Cardinals, Hummers, proper 'gold' goldfinches, tanagers, 'drab fall warblers' ( take a look at a European Field Guide, you haven't seen a drab warbler) I see most of the people who have left comments have their own BJ's and some even have Steller's Jays. I hope one day I can visit the USA and be 'irritated' by them too!!
Thanks for the blog...

But hey, Boulmer, don't feel left out; you have the oh-so-fab Magpie!

Most of my winter feeder birds are gray, black, white or some combo of the two (doves, nuthatches, downies, hairies, chickadees, juncos). I love the flash of blue on gray, snowy days. Bossy, maybe, but welcome at my house during a drab South Dakota winter.

How to Play Roulette Online

Betting methods of Roulette
Roulette Rules and Information

Online Roulette Some people like the bright lights of Las Vegas. They book their room in the Flamingo, fly down, see some shows, eat at the Vegas buffets, and bet a little money on the roulette wheel. However, this is an expensive, once a year type proposition. What happens if you are bored one night, and want to play some roulette, right there and right then? Booking a red eye flight to Vegas isn't an option. This is exactly the reason why playing at online casinos has sky-rocketed in popularity over the last few years. It's fun, it's quick, and it mimicks the real life experience of playing at a real casino. Why play roulette online instead of at a real casino? As I already mentioned, the cost of playing at Vegas is much higher. You have your room fee, your plane ticket, the cost of eating out while there, etc. It is very expensive. However, playing online is free. You can play at 3 am in the morning, while dressed in your bathrobe, eating a bowl full of popcorn. No one will rush you; you can take 20 minutes to place your next bets. You can have a notebook full of roulette strategies in front of you and no one will hassle you. The allure of the online casino is the convenience and ease of use.
