Warblers Past
One of the drawbacks of being a blog ant is perpetually living in the past. A minor ancillary risk is confusing those who know that the goldfinches should have changed into winter plumage by now, to name just one anachronism I’ve been busted for lately. And thus this disclaimer. Sometimes beauty comes so thick and fast that I’d have to have a mile-long post to fit it all in. And I’d rather have time to reflect on it than download and post frantically as it happens. I like to write posts when I’m in the mood to write them. It cuts down on the pressure and the feeling that I’m chained to the computer every day. Some days I’d rather paint, walk in the woods or clean the house than write posts.
Ever wish “blog” weren’t such a homely word? Me, too. I always have this faint squirmy embarrassment when I talk about my “blog” or the fact that I’m a “blogger.” I think it’s because it’s a made-up word and it sounds like a wad of something you’d find under your foot. I’d rather be a “poster.” But that sounds like “poser.”
There were so many warblers around in the last couple of weeks of September and the first week of October that I stored up a bunch of images to pull out later, enough for a couple of posts. They’ve moved on, but I haven’t.
Here's a bay-breasted warbler, a tough call, I know. The even-colored underparts, fairly plain face, lightly-streaked back and plain pale gray feet point toward bay-breast and away from blackpoll.
A lousy picture of a bay-breasted warbler, but I wanted to show you the trace of bay on his flank that gave him away, and unequivocally distinguished him from a blackpoll. Cool! You usually don't get that big a hint.
This little black-throated green warbler was inspecting my sickly birch tree for insect damage, and finding plenty. If you watch leaf-gleaning warblers, they invariably head for leaves that have been chewed or curled by insects. Look at the holes in the leaves he's picked out to check.
They’re good entomologists and they think like hunters, looking for signs that their prey has passed by. Black-throated green warblers look much the same in fall as they do in spring, but they have white frosting on their black throats.
Those pale feather edges will wear off by spring, revealing jet-black bases. I like this shot.A sweet little female Cape May warbler. Hands down, our most common warbler in fall, and one of the rarest in spring. They must take an entirely different route north than south. Just one of the mysteries of bird migration. But man, I’m glad to have them in the fall.
Unremarkable, until you notice the lemon-lime badonkadonk and heavy streaking all the way down the belly. Here ends our little fall warbler tutorial, a day late and a dollar short.Labels: bay-breasted warbler, black-throated green warbler, blog ant, Cape May warbler

A Cape May Warbler! And those abundant! Why did they so evade me here? The local consolation now is Sandhill Cranes, just east of the city. A real joy to encounter six there the other day. But local superbirder--you know who!--found the other 40 I'd overlooked...
Nick from Ottawa
Nothing escapes the peerless eye of Di Labio. We were BEGGING for a sandhill crane during the Big Sit. (!)but our wishes were not granted. Perhaps I should appeal to the Pope of Canadian Birding to send some down.
I keep meaning to tell you: the term "badonkadonk" has entered our household lexicon with a twist. Fiona misheard it the first time and now talks about "balumpadumps"...as in, what kind of bird is it that has a yellow balumpadump? (not a request for i.d., it's OUR most common fall warbler)
:) Wendi
Badonkadonk. I'm going to adopt the term and use it. The word "blog" does sound homely. I tire of people saying, "what's a blog? You do "what"? Post? What's a post?" Is it really true that on some days you'd rather clean house than write? You must be joking.
Your warblers are the best I've seen. I can't get close enough to those small, flitty busy bodies.
Grasshopper signing out.
I have to laugh at your lamenting the ordinariness of "blog" and then your comment that it is a made-up word.
Ahem--by definition, aren't ALL words made up?
But, yes, it is a homely word. Your "like a wad of something" is perfect.
I HATE the word blog! Yuck! An activity that is so rewarding and enjoyable should have a more charming name.
Point of fact: Is not "badonkadonk" also a made-up word?
However, it is rhythmic and sassy, and gets the point across, whereas "blog" just sits there, like an old plug of chewing tobacco or a wad of used gum on your shoe, or worse:
"What's wrong?"
"Oh, I just stepped in some blog."
When I talk about what I do, I inveriably say, "My web log." Sounds a little more professional, and a little less sleazy.
I find that I ant-blog when I have a wealth of things to talk about, like all the things I did on my vacation, and I am more grasshopperish when times are slow and I am scrounging for a topic. Anting does make things less timely, but it is nice to come home from a long day at work and just hit "Publish," without having to be creative when I'm tired and cranky.
~Kathi, who has stepped in worse things than blog in her time
Even worse to me is that "Poster" is a little too close to 'Postal'. Or do you need to be a little Postal to be a Poster?? tee hee
Julie, I can really appreciate your fall warbler photos because YOUR explanations actually help me to remember which bird has what, where I should look and I'd say for whatever drawbacks you may feel from time to time, your loyal readers LOVE your style, so keep on with the "web log". Yeah, I like that better than blog too.
I guess this makes you the science chimp-ant.

WOW! Amazing photos.
Oh--heard you on NPR yesterday!
Honestly Julie, I'm a little envious of your choices - paint, take a hike, clean house, or blog? I'm still trying to figure out how to get "sit in front of a computer 8 hrs a day doing work that doesn't enrich my soul" to NOT be one of my choices. I want to spend my days taking photos, hiking, biking and the like, and even blogging - generally doing things that enrich the soul. Too bad I also have to enrich my pocketbook. I have little steam left in the evenings for sitting in front of a computer after a full day of doing it at work. I know, grass is always greener on the other side. At least I get to read your blog while at work (but don't tell my boss!)
I'd rather step in a blog than a gutpile. Or gutstew.
Trust me, Heather, it's not as romantic as it sounds. I'm nose-to-grindstone all the time, too, albeit at home. Sometimes I step back and ask myself how a writer/painter can get so darn stressed out. I think we both need a good walk or paddle!
Yes, I agree, walk and/or paddle would give some comfort. I like to throw in a little Cute Overload and I Can Has Cheezeburger while at my desk at work for a good laugh - cuteness cures what ails you when you can't get a nature fix.
Since Swami has never seen a bird that looks like the next to last photo, there can only be one explanation: You trapped the bird and then painted it. It's ok, you can confess.
Swami!! I've been wondering where you've been! Welcome back! We're headed to New Mexico again in November and I'll try to get some more YAK pictures for you.
