What's That in the Corner?

Just a quick note to let you know that one of my commentaries, about houseplants that are no longer an asset, should air this afternoon (Friday, Jan. 4, '08) on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. Should you miss it, you can find the audio file here.
I consider these an asset, but beauty's in the eye of the beholder. Tippy pots of sprawly orchids aren't to everyone's taste.

YAY, Phoebe! These children are really great at keeping us on track. Zoey and Vivi do this all the time for me.

Thanks for the heads-up and the link. When this airs this evening here, I will be deep in a warehouse with no radio reception.

I marvel at anyone with houseplants. I just don't do them. I can barely keep my housecats fed and watered!

Will listen on the way home from work tonight.

Wait a minute! I think you didn't tell us about the Dec 27 commentary! Nice to get a two-for-one deal. Plus it was a master of understatement. I actually gasped when you said , "At 3:30..."

Julie, for some reason your commentary was replaced with a politician's commentary on NPR.

It was all political tonight on NPR - I missed it.

But I heard you loud and clear from the link. Agree - it's just a plant. I've only been sentimenal over one plant in my life, otherwise, CHOP CHOP.

Oh my. I hope I never get that attached to a plant. I did have a small ponytail palm in college we named Leon as it survived many nights of poker, cigars, and Leon Redbone with some Kappa Sigmas. I don't remember what happened to it. That, I suppose, is a good sign.

well, I'll put in a contrary view -- couldn't Steve have just topped off or pruned back the pines to make them suitable for the space? -- I do that often on overgrown houseplants (it's one thing if they're diseased or pest-ridden, but I can't just do-in a healthy plant)...

April, they must have fixed the link glitch. It works for me.

Cyberthrush, the problem with Norfolk Island pines (and other evergreens) is that you can't top them without defacing them. If the central meristem growth point is severed, they don't make nice sprouts from the side. They just sit there, beheaded. I am a ruthless cutter-backer of plants; just hacked an overgrown Ficus back in September and it's looking great now. But N.I. pines only know one way to grow--straight up. Just wish I had a picture of those mammoths for the blog.

Phoebe, Are you there? Am I doing this right? Can you hear me? I read your blog. I have Bee advice (did eye spell that write?).

Hi Julie,
I have really enjoyed your posts about your orchids and I would like to try to grow a few myself. If you have a chance can you recommend any websites, references, or prefered growers to get me started?
Thanks a bunch. John
