For Daddy
A couple of snow days this week turned into a golden opportunity for me and Phoebe to do some girl bonding. We studied a single-spaced, front and back list of spelling words for the elementary school spelling bee, held Thursday night. We had a blast, especially with the foreign words.
There was a run of words in the bee that felled kids like sheaves of wheat: Burrito. Chimichanga. And Phoebe got up and spelled Mariachi correctly. She may have been the only kid in that room who's actually heard a live mariachi band. She's heard several, in fact, most recently in a little bar in New Mexico.
Naturally, I burst with pride when the Marietta Times came today with a picture of Miss Coco Chanel spelling Mariachi to take the fifth grade trophy. Her friend McKenzie won for the fourth grade, and her friend Allie won for the sixth. We think the bee on the trophy bears more resemblance to a cockroach, but we'll take it.
Who designs these things??

Irregardless of who designed them your dear daughter won one because both of her parents understand the importance of and love language and words. Hip Hip hurray! Congrats to Miss Coco Channel for a wonderful job well done! I will patiently await that book that I know she will be writing in the next few years. Some of my favorite authors have passed on and there is a void there that I know she will waltz into with ease.
YIPPY! Tell Phoebe she is aces with me. And she looks marvelous. Right fine job, too, Mom.
And she will continue to be a winner. She has a support group at home that can't be beat. Who cares about the looks of the trophy, LOL! It's hers... Congratulations, Phoebe!

At my daughter's school, all she got for winning a spelling bee was a crummy ribbon. Yours is homely, but at least it's *shiny*! Congratulations to you, well done. :)
These kinds of achievements set up a pattern for life. This is something to be proud of. (And you're lucky to have a mom who is eager to brag about you!)

That trophy is a mixture of bee wings, Mickey Mouse hands, a kilt and a geeky pair of glasses. That's just weird.

Good question, SGN! I had never realized why these spelling bee trophies offend me so much. (You should see last years!) I thought it was because they were so plug-ugly. Thanks to you, I realize that it's because of the geek stereotype--you have to be ugly and wear thick glasses to be smart, right? Why not have a beautiful, realistic bee with a crown on its head?

That's got to be the scariest looking trophy ever. Bizarre. Nevertheless, extreme congratulations to Miss Coco who looks delightful in her picture in the Marietta Times! Congrats to her for her spelling prowess and to the genetic pool from whence she sprang!

I am old enough to be your grandmother, but I remember being in spelling bees back in the old days..and I recall they were mighty nerve-wracking. You go girl!!!
I add my congratulations to Phoebe. And my agreement with the bizarre ugliness of the trophy. Fortunately, eventually trophies like that can disappear as they are replaced with further accomplishments. But the experience of working with your mom and practicing and achieving that goal last a very long time.
I remember when I was working and learning in the spelling bee (which was a very long time ago) and I alway get great pleasure writing out miscellaneous, because I am reminding of how fun I thought it was to learn that word.
