A Feast of Flowers, a Macaw's Birthday

Of all the things Magic enjoyed while he was a guest in my fledging tent, it was the daily influx of fresh-cut flowers. I had to come into the tent with camera locked and loaded, because the minute I put that vase in place, he was all over those blossoms. It was a neat opportunity to learn what he liked and how he approached each species. But then everything is an experiment for a Science Chimp, right?Agastache, or Mexican hyssop, is a plant that's come into some favor lately. I like it because even though it looks exotic and its leaves smell divine, it's a perennial, and it gets bigger and nicer every year. Hummingbirds love it. Magic found its somewhat floppy flowers a challenge, and he'd probe deep into them, bringing them from horizontal to full upright in his quest to plumb their nectar.
Lots of insects and birds enjoy the nectar of oregano. I imagine it might have a kick to it. Magic seemed interested in it, and visited repeatedly. You might not think a small, white, clustered flower like this would hold attraction for a hummingbird, but they feed on a surprising variety of different flowers. Buddleia, for instance, is something I'd always assumed was for butterflies, until I saw the extent to which my hummingbirds feed on it.
In between feeding bouts, he'd rest. It's important when housing hummingbirds to provide them with the smallest possible twigs for perching. I taped these fine birch twigs all over the tent.
Cardinalflower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a huge rubythroat favorite. Its blooming is timed to coincide with peak hummingbird abundance, and its incomparable hue is the best, truest red going in my garden. When you see a wild hummingbird with a white, powdered forehead, it's been anointed with pollen by the protruding stamens of this plant. My cardinalflower gets pollinated, boy does it, and the seed children are proof, coming up everywhere. I never thought I'd be giving cardinalflower away, but I'm almost at that point.
Time to stretch a wing and tail. And if you've ever wondered whether hummingbirds yawn, well, they do. And they sneeze, too, but that's harder to photograph. Maybe someday.I took these pictures on Magic's penultimate morning with me, August 17. It also happened to be Charlie the macaw's 20th birthday! I could do a "What is wrong with this picture?" post with this photograph. Let's start with the fact that he's standing on the keyboard of my laptop. He spends quite a bit of time there, but I kick him off when he starts preening, because I don't want greasy little bird sheath bits in my keyboard. Next, we can notice the tipped wine glass, right over the keyboard. Durr. And we can end with the Surgeon General's warning about alcohol as pertains to parrots. A no-no. But if a bird can't have a swig or two of King Shag Sauvignon Blanc on his 20th birthday, when can he? Ye gods, that bird adores wine, and he's got a bit of a taste for beer, too. Totally up to us to limit his consumption, which we do, we do.
Here's to 20 years of companionship from my sweet, irascible, tender, nippy friend. If my orchard oriole and Savannah sparrow made it to 17, Lord only knows how long Charles will party on. Wine and all. Love ya, Chuckles.

Happy Birthday to Charlie. I can imagine what a macaw drinking wine is like....very interesting.

Cardinal flower. Does it do well in pots?

Oh bless. I'm always glad when Charlie makes an appearance...they're few and far between, as if he's the madwoman in your attic. Love him, ratty feathers and all!

I'm glad to get your recommendations for those 2 good h'bird plants. I had almost given up trying to introduce something new here--usually has not met with longstanding success. But, those I added THIS year, ARE doing well, so maybe I'll try some more!
Yawn, yawn, yawn--litle Magic's making me sleepy. G'night!

Happy Birthday to Charlie! The boy knows how to celebrate, for sure! I really needed a laugh tonight.

Your hummingbird photos and recommendations are wonderful and I thank you. Can we see more of Charlie? It's been a while...

Let's all pour a glass in honor of Charlie and Magic tonight :o)

Magic is certainly a good name for that little hummer.

Charlie looks pretty good for a "tatty old rotter." Must be the beneficial aspect of an occasional drink of wine!

Cheers Charlie, ... and good luck to Magic, he is very cute when yawning. Your hummingbird photos are really wonderful and the little bird seems so glad to be there!

Hi Trixie,

I don't know about potted cardinalflower. It grows in pots at the nursery. Probably ought to check the hardiness zone. I've seen it in southern CT but that's about as far north as I know of. AK might be a stretch.
Charlie says thanks for all the good wishes. He's got me all to himself now that the kids are in school and that's just how he likes it. He's strutting around a lot, intimidating Chet, to the soundtrack of the mad scrabble of claws on floor.

Just so much happy nectar here. I'm digging deep.

I'd say please give Charlie a hug for me, but just how does one express affection to a Macaw?

Ohhhh . . . right-- Sauvignon Blanc.

Cathy, you take the upper beak between thumb and forefinger and kiss him a big ol' smooch right on the soft white skin of his little cheek. He'll make a loud smooching noise when you do it. And you CAN hug a macaw. But these activities are only recommended between consenting parties. Charles offers a free lip-piercing service to anyone who tries to get familiar without an invitation. Ahh, macaws. They have their own draconian rules about personal space. Any wonder that when I finally went for what Bill refers to as a "Real Pet," I chose a Boston terrier, friendliest dog on the planet?

Wendi, I know that Charlie doesn't appear on the blog too much. Here's why: He has the most disconcerting habit of trying to bite the camera whenever it's pointed at him. He takes that even farther, though, seeking it out to viciously attack it when it's just sitting on the drawing table, asleep. You don't want that beak applied to a Canon Rebel XTI. So most of my photos of Charlie are this blurry, oversized, gaping beak, pinned pupils, hair standing straight up. It's really hard to catch him just being himself.I'd use the 300 mm. telephoto on him, but it's hard to get that far away inside. He enjoys being photographed, but probably mostly for the adrenaline thrill of chasing me around the room and trying to score on my most favorite piece of equipment.

My cardinalflower didn't make it. I need to try again next year.

Charlie! Happy b-day, and take it easy on the booze and the cigars, dude.

You are very funny when you write about Charlie. Be careful; we'll be growling for Chuck just like we growl for Chet when he's been away too long, and we'll leave you thinking it's all about the animals, not the other great stuff you share with us.

Where's Kathi to gently berate you for boozing Charlie up?

A hummingbird yawn--how precious is that!?

Happy Birthday Charlie!! A fellow Virgo too, although I'm not too into preening I also love wine and beer but alas have no one to moderate my consumption.

I've never seen a parrot drink wine, and now I'd like to raise a glass to him. What a fine 20th birthday present.

Oh your Magic is such a sweet thing. I love this daily look into his young life. Here in the northwest our buddleia blooms after the hummers have headed south, but the bees and butterflies do adore it.

Who knew that hummingbirds could open their mouths so wide? I love the yawning Magic pic the mostest.

As for Charlie drinking wine, who am I to argue with someone who has a 20 year old parrot and loves him despite (or because of) his habit of biting her to show affection? Zick must be doing something right, so I defer to her methods on the care and feeding of parrots.

Party on, Chuckles! (Although I believe the legal age for alcohol consumption in this state is 21...)

Magic was a great reason to pick flowers!

I'm glad Charlie has you to himself again. Macaws don't like to share.

yes, hooray for Charlie; I miss seeing more of him as well, even if most of his photos are of "this blurry, oversized, gaping beak, pinned pupils, hair standing straight up" (that describes most of us first thing in the morning anyway, doesn't it!!)
And BTW I'd be interested in his recommendation for a fine Beaujolais...

Your comment about "cardinalflower coming up everywhere" is so true! This year, not a single one of the cardinalflowers showed up where I had planted them 3 or 4 years ago. Instead, I had "volunteer" cardinalflowers come up in all sorts of inconvenient places, like between the flagstones of my garden patio. For the sake of the hummingbirds, though, I let them stay, even rearranging the flagstone to give them more room! These plants are a favorite of our hummingbirds.

Julie -

Happily posted camera info after your comment.

My hubby wants a 'real pet' too. His candidate: Golden retriever. Sigh. It would be our 3rd.

LOG, you're fine, and so's Katdoc, if I'm reading everyone right. Katdoc only spanks me when I goof with Chet, and I usually need it! I'm always amazed at what I don't know about dogs and cats, and I'm happy to get her input--sometimes I go fishing for it.

I love Charlie, it can be very hard to train a beautiful Macaw such as he. I am also intrigued by the hummingbird you photoed. Is it possible that he is a pet or has he just become a constant visitor to your cardinal plant.
